Little Spotted Kiwi (Kapiti Island, New Zealand)

Kiwis, the national birds of New Zealand, are neither equipped for flight nor fight, making them easy prey for mammalian predators. This individual was photographed foraging in the woods at night on the Kapiti Island Nature Preserve. It was illuminated with a red light that doesn't appear to be noticed by the bird, and photographed with the MAGICVU / 0 LUX capability of a Panasonic Mini DV Palmcorder that renders images in black and white. A Kiwi burrow is shown at the end of the video.

Kapiti is one of several islands that have been designated as national wildlife refuges dedicated to the preservation and population increase of these rare birds.
